IMPACT DISTRIBUTION
Distributing films with social impact is affirming that cinema can facilitate dialogues, deepen debates, propose other manners of thinking and acting, create social imaginary that inspires change, and connect communities and networks to strengthen causes and struggles committed to social emancipation.
At Taturana, we have developed our own social technology of impact distribution based on strategies co-created with the involved filmmakers, territories and social actors.
TRAINING
Taturana provides workshops, courses, lectures and masterclasses about cinema and social impact in different spaces, such as audiovisual courses at non formal schools and universities, and at film festivals and laboratories. In these training spaces, it critically addresses the traditional distribution models and their structural exclusions; and shares its social technology for the design and execution of campaigns committed to social issues. It also works on themes such as audience development, construction of narratives of impact and circuits of community screenings.
TATURANA PLATFORM
The Taturana Platform is a digital tool, in free software, that makes films with relevant social themes available for people and institutions to hold self-managed screenings in their territories (physical or digital!), followed by an activity, such as a chat, debate or discussion group.
The exhibitor mobilizes locally, coordinates and holds the session/cinema debate. Each exhibitor becomes a partner, so that the Taturana network currently has more than 3,000 spaces registered on the platform.
Composed of cultural centers, film clubs, institutions and social movements, collectives, public and private schools, universities, cultural agents, public facilities, etc., this network contributes to the democratization of access to cinema and organizes exhibition circuits with social impact. It also builds a permanent schedule of free public screenings, expands the circulation of films beyond traditional cinema windows and strengthens dialogues and debates on urgent social issues.
TATURANA FILM FESTIVAL
The Taturana Film Festival for Democracy has taken place since 2019, with a focus on dialogues and debates about democratic values, such as dignity and social participation; equality; environmental, racial and gender justice; emancipation and freedom; common good and good living; among others.
The conceptions of representativeness, exercise of politics, occupation of public space, the use of technology and means of communication face several transformations and are in dispute in Brazil and in the rest of world. In this context, there are many challenges to strengthen, build and rescue the democratic practices and values that guarantee the social rights and existence of different groups.
The curatorship, composed at each edition by members of Taturana and the partner organizations of the Festival, considers the cinema a privileged tool to deepen these dialogues and break away from the hegemonic models of seeing, thinking and representing the other within a logic of oppression.
LATIN AMERICAN FORUM OF CINEMA AND SOCIAL IMPACT
The Latin American Forum of Cinema and Social Impact is an annual space for meeting, reflection and the construction of cinema networks for social impact. It aims impact producers, directors, audiovisual training organizations, field researchers, representatives fromtraining laboratories and cultural support funds.
Through the Forum, Taturana is committed to the strengthening of the exchange of experiences with other actors in the field – as well as promoting sustainable policies for the audiovisual sector, in line with its function as a cultural asset.
As an unprecedented initiative in the region, the Forum is based on the long trajectory of experiences that enhance the relationship between cinema and social impact in Latin America and is coordinated with partner organizations in Colombia and Mexico, namely Doccolabs and Ambulante and Impacta Cine, respectively.
